Around a year ago I decided to knit a scarf for my boyfriend. I wanted to make a 6-foot long version of the Ginger Smith square from The Great American Aran Afghan book, but I couldn’t find the pattern anywhere, so I decided to make my own version. Anyway I’m only a beginning knitter and I guess I chose a too complicated pattern because it’s a year later and I’ve only completed 1 foot. I have 5 more feet to go and I’m hoping to get the scarf done by the end of winter. Help! I need some encouragement!
WOW!!! That is AMAZING work, especially for someone new to knitting!!! It took me about 10 years to get up the courage to start on cables. I am really impressed with your work. Keep on going sweetie!!! You’re really doing awesome work, and it will be worth it to know that you accomplished something so great!!! Good luck!!

This is going to be one gorgeous scarf and you will be the one who made it. Cable is still out of my league… mostly because I’m chicken… but maybe you can inspire me if you finish this beauty!
Perhaps you could finish it easier if you committed yourself to doing 20 minutes a day on it. A lot can be accomplished in 20 minutes and before you know it… the thing will be done and you can wear it and show off your prowess!

You’re going to get a lot of encouragement to finish that scarf from the posters here at KHF!!! Looking at that scarf no one is going to think you are a beginner knitter…your work is already in the “advanced” category!
What you have done so far is perfect and that is going to be one gorgeous scarf.
Tell your boyfriend to be careful because it’s a “stealer”. I made a similar scarf for my sister and it was stolen off her back while she was walking through Heathrow Airport. I made another for her and she makes sure it is pinned to her coat or jacket.

Beautiful-looking scarf, great work, looks like an advanced knitter’s work. Set aside a few minutes a day you can work on it and it will be finished in no time.

Great idea about spending a few minutes a day on it. It takes me about 20 minutes to complete one RS row (11 cables! yikes!) and about 10 minutes to complete one WS row, so I’ll aim to spend 30 minutes every day on it and knit two rows. Hopefully it’ll be done in mid-March, just like ArtLady1981 mentioned. And when I do finish it, I’ll be sure to update this post with pictures!

Wow, great work for a beginner especially since you are creating it on your own. I think it’s beautiful. Keep going and do as everyone else has suggested…limit yourself to knitting only a certain length per day (1") or on a time limit (20 Minutes).
I agree with the rest - it sure doesn’t look like a beginner project! Great job so far!! And like Artlady said, just committing to spend a few minutes a day will give you a lot of progress! You can do it!
I was hoping that you would be encouraged to continue with your wonderful scarf by breaking it down into small daily ‘requirements.’ Sometimes the entire thing can be so overwhelming when viewed as a whole! Like climbing any mountain, or enjoying any hike, it’s one step at a time over several days or weeks. Enjoy the journey, no matter what!

Lol, are you kidding? I STARTED to knit in grade school BECAUSE I wanted to do cables!! Yeah, I kept going: mommy, when can I do cables? Mommy, now? Mommy- Lol, I eventually gave up and just stole some yarn and a cable pattern and started on my own… yeah… I say you have to finish this!!! because cables are incredibly lovely and everyone will ooh and ahh on it and yeah…
