WIP-3 color double knit hat with ribbed band

This is the beginning of my second project ever!:cheering:

I posted my first project ( 2 color Coronet hat ) that I made for my wife and some of you said you couldn’t wait to see what I did next. Well, I couldn’t wait to show you, so there isnt much finished yet. This is going to be my first project without a pattern, unless you consider the complex pattern I made up on my own. I don’t have it all written out yet, and I haven’t figured out how I’ll decrease it yet, so if you have any suggestions I would love to hear 'em.

So far, I have a 2 color band that has k3 p2 ribs with the other side having the purls inside the knit stitches on the front and vice versa. They seem to be cooperating nicely.

I cast on with a heavily modified long tail cast-on with both colors. I’ll try to explain: I made a slip knot and held both colors in my left hand. One stitch in grey, switch colors, one stitch in red, switch, grey, switch, red, switch, grey. Then I held the yarn in my right and cast on the next 5 red grey red grey red. I continued in this fashion for 180 st. (90 for each hat). This not only made the colors for each side start right, it made the ribbing pattern start on the cast-on. (I monkeyed with this for 2 days)

Joined and worked in round like this:
k1 MC with both yarns in back
k1 CC with MC yarn in front
k1 MC with both yarns in back
k1 CC with MC yarn in front
k1 MC with both yarns in back

p1 CC with both yarns in front
p1 MC with CC yarn in back
p1 CC with both yarns in front
p1 MC with CC yarn in back
p1 CC with both yarns in front

continue for 8 rounds and you get this:

Whew, that was long.:guyknitting:

Okay, heres the plan for the rest:
I have added black yarn to this mess and spent 3 days trying to figure out a pattern I would wear. Did I mention this hat is for me.:aww: Anyway, I couldn’t decide on just one, so I made 2, one for the inside (red side) and one for the outside (grey). Here they are by themselves, and in one combined ugly pattern. The ones apart are the whole pattern except the decreases, and the one where they are together is one of the 5 repeating patterns.

I have finished just 4 rounds and it is starting to look good. I will post another picture when you can see the patterns taking shape.

:passedout:

Need I say more? :teehee:

Can’t wait to see the finished project!

Oh my, do you have a degree in engineering? I still get confused reading a sock pattern. Can’t wait to see the FO when it comes about. Amazing pattern structure.

No, I’m not an engineer, just a numbers guy. I am a construction electrician by trade and I design control circuts, but I read a lot and do suduko and logic problems for fun. I guess I should have started with hot pads or something, but I wanted a challenge. My mom saw my wifes hat and she didn’t believe I made it. She will be coming over in a week for my daughter’s birthday and she will see then. lol

This is amazing! I did a double knit potholder once to try it out and it only had a simple heart on it. Your hat will be really cool if you can pull it off and we’re all rooting for you. Of Troy is the forum double knitting person. She’ll like this.

:happydance: Can’t wait to see it finished!!

DITTO!

Wow! Can’t wait to see how it looks finished!

:knitting: The work is slow going, because I have a lot of other stuff going on. I did a double knit illusion dishcloth and birthday party planning. Here is a pic of each side.

 Lookin’ Good!!
