Will two different sizes work?

Good morning fellow knitters!
I am knitting my son a cable knit sweater with flat panels to be seamed together. All is going well except for the fact I think it will be to big on width. I am only on the back panel now. My question is, could I follow a smaller size for the front provided both sides are equal length or would seaming it up look funny or affect how the sleeves fit?
Thank you,
Jenny

How about cutting a front panel of the right size from some worn out bed sheet or from a t-shirt and then attach it with some (safty) pins and then make a judgement? Knowing how many hours of work a sweater is, I do not dare to give any other advice on this issue and I do not know if anyone else dares either. You are the one that will have to do the judgement on how to proceed.
