Will this yarn work as a substitute

My first time asking a question. Hope I get this right. I’m a relative novice picking up knitting again after a number of yrs. I have a pattern for a child’s blanket but the suggested yarn is discontinued. I have purchased a yarn of same weight and similar in appearance. The pattern has a gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows using size 10 needle. But the gauge on yarn using size 7 needles is 20 stitches and 25 rows. Will this work.

Welcome to KH!
The best way to be sure is to knit a good sized swatch (maybe 5"x5"). Then measure the sts/inch over the middle 4".
There’s a bit of a difference in stitch gauge between the pattern and the yarn but the important thing is to see the gauge that you get with the yarn and needles. See if you like the knit fabric as well, not too loose or to tight and stiff.
What is the name of your pattern?

The name is dippity dots baby blanket. Thanks so much for responding. I’ve always followed what pattern says, so this is the first time I’m venturing out a little on my own.

Hello
This website is useful if you one across a pattern with discontinued yarn, or perhaps a pattern where the yarn doesn’t come in a colour you like, or you prefer a different composition (eg you prefer vegan yarn or prefer natural rather than man-made) or perhaps prefer a different price range.

That doesn’t mean you can’t just choose your own yarn of course, I’ve done that too, and then swatch to check the gauge and how the fabric turns out. I have a yarn I tried a swatch for a pattern detail, I think it is called a mock cable and I didn’t like how it looked in that yarn at all, but same yarn different stitch pattern (not sure of the names, eyelets and maybe seed stitch and lace detail) looked lovely in my swatch so I went ahead with that.

I suggest after making a swatch you wash and block it as the feel and drape changes and the size of the gauge can change too. It’s best to measure after washing really. I was surprised how much a fabric could change after washing.

That’s darling! Since it’s a blanket, you have a bit of leeway on gauge. Worth making the stockinette stitch swatch with your yarn and needles in any case. Then you can be more sure of the size your blanket will be when finished.

Knitters often have to change the specified yarn in a pattern either because it’s been discontinued as yours has or from preference. Yarnsub.com as Creations suggested is a usually a helpful site because it matches on gauge as well as yarn composition and texture. In this case it offers no suggestions.

Good luck with it and come back if you have questions about needle size, gauge, stitch number.

Can’t wait to get started. I’ll be sure to reach out again with any questions as you suggest. The help and support here is great!
