How would you go about adjusting a sock pattern to fit a wide foot? I am making a thank you pair of socks for a friend and he wears an 11W. I don’t have his foot around to try the sock on him so I just want to make sure that it fits…It seems to me that socks stretch so it shouldn’t be a problem but I thought I’d come to the experts for advice…
Wide sock question
I made a pair of socks for my brother, he also wears 11-12W. I didn’t do a lot of calculations, but the yarn I used was a bit thicker than regular sock yarn, and I used 72 stitches on 3mm needles. It fit him perfectly.
Check this out
Print it out, put it in a page protector, and keep it forever. I didn’t write this, just found it and have used it too many times to count.
What pattern are you using, have you already begun and need to make adjustments after you are in the pattern? Do you want to make adjustments for the whole sock or just the foot portion?
Lonnie wears size 11 socks and I knit his socks with size 1 (2.5 mm) needles with a 72 st cast on and they fit fine. If you want to adjust up for the whole sock going up a needle size may be helpful…the same goes for if you just want to increase the size of the foot, you can change to a size 2 when you begin working the heel and the rest of the foot if it’s just his feet that are wide but his legs are not larger. Now, I’ve not been on here in months…did that make sense?!
If you don’t have measurements around, how about a stretchy ribbing on the top of the foot?

Silver, thanks for the chart!!!
thanks guys–and especially for the chart! I haven’t started yet so I don’t have a specific pattern in mind…if anyone has anything that works especially well to suggest, I’m game. I thought I’d just look through sensational knitted socks and “assemble my own”.
Assembing your own is FUN! There are some men’s sock patterns on KPC, too. You have all your info in Sensational Knitted Socks, too…that is a GREAT book, it’s an infaluable resource for socknitters and…I just read in the latest Interweave Knits that she is (I’m not sure if it’s published yet) putting out another sock book.

That chart ROCKS! thanks for posting it!

Thanks so much for that link to the chart Silver!
Excellent chart. I just saved a copy myself.
I would imagine that being as socks are rather stretchy the fit shouldn’t be an issue as long as the length is correct. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen socks in a men’s shop specifically for a wide foot. They generally are only sized by length.
If you make them perhaps 1/2" longer they should fit a wider foot without straining the stitches.
Wow! That is awesome! Thank you!
