I am just wondering WHY stitches are slipped? What effect does this have on the garment?
If you mean slipping the first stitch of the row, it makes the edge much neater.
And slipping in a row is a way of decreasing. Or if the row is alternating slip stitches with knits or purls, it’s for a stitch pattern.

Or if you are slipping the first stitch such as in a sock pattern, it may be to make it easier to pick up and knit stitches later. Other examples are such as when you slip a stitch and turn to make a short row. Or to slip a stitch then pass over as part of the design.
