My Mom wants to make something and she started by rolling all her yarn into balls. Why is this done? is it really needed or just a waste of time?
i need to know.

Depends on how the yarn is wound when you buy it. If it is a hank of yarn, then yes, you have to wind your yarn into more manageable balls. A hank is just yarn wound into a loop and if you tried to knit with it the way it comes from the store, it would turn into a mess of tangles.
If it is a skein or a center pull ball, then you don’t have to wind a ball. They are set up so that you can just find the end of the yarn and start knitting with it straight from the yarn as it comes from the store.
I wind all my yarn becasue I have had several times I have been in the middle of a row and have then seen that the yarn is tied together. So I always ball mine now. I sometimes do a center pull one and sometimes just a regular one.
I might be really weird, but I actually enjoy winding all of my yarn into balls! I get to appreciate my purchase a second time as I wind it up. It’s part of the excitement of buying new yarn for me!
Also, like MAma Dawn, I have had enough problems with skeins either knotted together or actually coming out really tangled to justify my yarn-balling habit.

Thanks for your input. I didn’t realize - My mom is recooping from surgery and wanted something to work on. She started this and it will be interesting to watch. Maybe i will learn a little something.
