Why knit the next row and the cast-on row together?

I am knitting PetiteKnit’s Oslo Hat Mohair edition

After casting on, you knit several inches. Then the pattern instructs you to knit together the next round of stitches and cast on edge together. You essentially pick up a stitch from the cast on edge and knit it together with the associated stitch on the current row.

I am really confused why we would do this? Is this to help with the fold of the hat…?

This will create a folded up brim with no loose edge that stays folded.

I’m wondering how many inches you knit before you knit the cast on edge to the next round. The hat looks like you might make this hem and then fold up the brim. That way there would be 4 layers at the ears.

Thank you both!

Follow up question:

I don’t have quite enough of my yarn. I was planning to knit in a different color that then gets hidden behind the front of the brim, and then knit the top of the hat back in the true main color.

If I have to knit 6 inches before the knitting the cast on edge to the next round (assuming only half of that length is seen when you fold it over by knitting the cast on edge)- would I knit three inches in my regular main color, the next three inches in the hidden color, then knit a row of my regular main color and then knit the cast on edge to the next round ?

I’m glad it makes sense now. That’s a good idea. I’d like it that way even if I wasn’t short of the main color. Half of the total length is 3" so that’s correct.
