Why does knitting improve my reading comprehension?

Does anyone else think that reading a college textbook is like trying to read in a foreign language? I’ve been struggling all semester with the online classes and the reading assignments associated with them. About a month ago I realized that if I knit while I’m reading the text, I actually understand (and retain) what it’s saying.

I’m curious to know why? What is it about knitting that does this?

On another note, I finally found a back saver so I’m not hunched over my coffee table trying to read: I put the textbook on a music stand. Voila! I can sit back and relax while I read and knit.

I am able to listen better when knitting so maybe reading is the same way.
