Why Cut The Thread?

I am knitting socks and the instructions tell me to cut the yarn after dividing for the heel. However, it does not mention what yarn to carry on with to knit the heel. I don’t understand. Your help would be appreciated.

Use the yarn from the ball to start knitting the next section. Just start knitting with it and you can snug it up later.

What will happen if I just continue without cutting?

If the yarn is in the right place to start knitting, then give it a try. If it’s not in the right spot, you’ll have a long strand somewhere.

Does the pattern have different color heels than the rest of the sock? This could account for cutting the yarn.

I’ve made several pairs of socks and never had to cut the yarn. Unless you’re making a different color heel I don’t see a reason. :?? What pattern are you using? Can you link to it?
