Why a change in writing instructions?

D’ya think maybe I am 4 rows short on the right side of this cuff? The instructions read thus:
" Using your main needles cast on 19 sts and work 4 rows in stocking stictch." it then says:
1st row blah blah
2nd row blah blah
Work 14 rows in stocking stitch"

Do you count these as 20 rows or 16?

On the other side of cuff it reads like this:
1st row blah blah
2nd row blah,
3rd row
4th row
etc to 24th row

Why is it written differently?

Well we could REALLY use a link to the pattern on this one I think.

" Using your main needles cast on 19 sts and work 4 rows in stocking stictch." it then says:
1st row blah blah
2nd row blah blah
Work 14 rows in stocking stitch"

Do you count these as 20 rows or 16?

Since you indicate that after the 4 rows of stocking stitch it begins with “row 1” then i wouldnt count those 4 rows.

Some patterns do weird things that all come out to make sense later on in the project. Theres a saying I belive in…“Trust The Pattern” but as in all things…there are exceptions…LOL

Need to see the pattern to help further…sorry

Thank you for your help-it is much appreciated!

You can see a picture of the sweater here:

Click where it says see inside of book, and then keep clicking on next image. When you get to the page with a little girl with a pink hat it will be on the NEXT page. The correcet pattern is a little boy in a beige coat sweater, with a white helmet type of hat.

I think I get it… one cuff overlaps the other, so it needs to be longer.

Yes, but the bottom edges should be even. I cannot make that happen if I put a short piece (16 rows) on the needle even with a longer piece (24 rows). I can’t see much–but, I can see enough to see I am really missing something here!! :muah:  :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee:

So how are the cuffs knit - one part with the back of the sleeve and one with the front?

Dear Suzeeq: Snow storm prevented me from getting to my local yarn shop, so I must hope that you are still willing to help! Here are the instructions exactly as written:
 Left Sleeve/Right side of cuff:
cast on
work 4 rows in stocking sts

FIRST ROW inc in 1st st (sleeve edge)knit
SECOND ROW purl
Work 14 rows in stocking stitch inc 1 st at sleeve edge in 3,7,11
Break off yarn and slip onto holder

Left Sleeve/Left side of Cuff
cast on
First Row: knit
Second Row: purl to last 5 sts, k 5
repeat these two rows once
5th Row: (buttonhole row) k1 k2 tog, yfwd, knit to last 2 sts inc in next st k1
6th Row as 2nd row
7th Row k 4 wrap 1 turn
8th Row k 4
9th Row knit
10th Row purl to last 5 sts, k5
11th Row k to last 2 sts inc in next st, k1
12th Row as second row
Repeat from 9 to 12 row once
Repeat 9th and 10th rows once
19th row buttonhole row k1, k2tog,yfwd,knit to last 2 sts, inc in next, k1
20th row as 2nd row
21 Row k4,wrap 1, turn
22 Row k4
23 Row as 1st row
24 Row purl to last 5 sts, k5
break off yarn.

NOW COMES the hard part!
“With the right side of the work facing you, rejoin yarn to the sts left on the stitch holder for the right side of the cuff, (inc in 1st stitch 1 time), knit to the last 5 stitches, then with the needle holding the sts fro the left side of the cuff in front of these 5 sts, (knit together 1st st from the right side of the cuff (knit together 1st from the right side and one st from the left side of the cuff) 5 times, knit across the next 16 sts on the left side of cuff (inc in next st 1 times) k1.
Next row Purl”

So on the right side of the cuff there are 20 rows, and 24 on the left side and you’ll have ended with the WS on both of them.

Turn them both so the RS are facing, take the right side and start knitting with another yarn end, inc and knit to the last 5 sts, then with the left side of the cuff in front, knit together a stitch from each needle. You can look at the 3 needle bind off to get an idea how this works, just don’t bind off. You’ll be attaching both sides of the cuff. Then you knit the sts on the left cuff with an increase at the end of the row, k1. Turn and purl and the cuffs are joined. Knitting the 5 sts of each cuff together makes a little pleat where they’re joined.

Thank you soo much! We are on the way out of town so you won’t hear from me again for a few days. But I will let you know how it works out. Thank you again for your time and patience–they are a gift!
