Which yarn wt?

I know you have answered many questions about yarn wts, knowing about gauges, needing how may yards?.

Now the thing I cannot figure out:
I have yarn already. I want to use it, but how do I know the Wt of a particular yarn.

Can I figure it out from knowing the above information like this:

The Yarn Requirements Chart says (for example) DK yarn wt using needle size 5-7, and stitches/inch 5.25-6.

If I use a particlar yarn, with size 6 needles, and get about 6/stitch on a 4x4 intch swatch.

Can I assume that the yarn I want to use is DK, by such a weird deduction?

I’d assume it was a dk weight at that gauge.
