Which side is the right side?

Hi. I think I’ve found a different sweater pattern so I don’t have to try and resize the other one I mentioend on my first post… but now I’ve got a new question!

Here is the pattern: Cast on 55 st, Work in k1, p1 rib for 3/4 inch and end RS…

How do I know which is the RS when its a rib? Have I just done an odd number of rows or an even number?

Second question: Which cast-on would be recommended in this situation?

thanks in advance!!
Susanne

Long-tail is good CO option. As for RS, look at your CO row. If LT, the tail would be on your left. If you work strictly by gauge…for ex: if you’re getting 8 rows/in, you’d do 6 rows…but don’t get locked into row counts unless the patt specifies. (If your gauge were 6 rows/in, no way you could divide that into 1/4s.) Best to measure. Depending on your CO, some want the CO to show on the RS, some don’t. Some COs are very obvious. So that’s subjective in some cases.

Once you’ve worked the rib to the req’d length/depth, mark the side you want to be the right side.

With ribbing or garter, you can decide which is the RS, usually it’s the odd rows. I think it’s really saying that the next row will be the WS, so you would do a purl row if stockinette, or the WS row of whichever stitch pattern the sweater is in.

Thank you!!!
