Which M1 do I use?

Hi all! I’m hoping you can help me. I’m knitting Spider-Man for my nephew and when I get to the head (which is knit flat) it says to cast on 6 then:

Row 1: 6 Inc
Row 2: P
Row 3: inc, k1 (across)
Row 4: P
Row 5: inc, k2 (across)

Then it follows the same progression (purl row followed by row with 1 increase plus knit stitches) through 16 rows. I want to use M1, but how do I figure out if it’s left or right?

It shouldn’t matter which you use. The best way to tell is to try one out either on Spidey or a some spare swatch. See which you like but as long as you consistently use one or the other it should be fine.
