Which cast-on method?

I am just learning to knit and am confused by all the different cast-on methods.

For my first project, I used the Continental cast-on, which says it creates a knit row which can be used as the first row.

What if the first row is supposed to be a purl row? Which cast-on method is best for that?

Thanks!

Cheryl

It actually doesn’t make a row of knitting. For now, don’t count it as a row and just start your knitting with whatever the pattern gives you. As you get more experienced you might experiment with different ways of making the first row to see which look you like better. I use this one for about 80% of my knitting and don’t do anything different on the first row.

Thank you so much! This makes it much easier! Now I’m off to go cast on!!

Each cast on method and there are a lot can have different results and some methods are better for certain patterns and some patterns specify a particular method. I personally like long tail cast on but my friends are trying to get me to use the Old Norwegian/Twisted German method for making socks. Experimentation is lots of fun and you will find you like some methods better than others.
