Where to pick up extra stitch

I’m so frustrated cause I know this is probably so simple but I’m making it hard. I have knitted a bunch of practice socks and have not found a way to get rid of that famous sock hole (in the corner before and after the instep). I know that I should pick up an extra stitch or two in the corner. My problem is
1- what is considered the corner
2-where do i pick up in the corner (there are a bunch of places)
3-do i just pick up the stitch and place it on my needle without working it or do i pick up the stitch and work it off my needle.
4- which leg of the extra stitch do i pick up before and after the instep

Any photos, descriptions, suggestions, basically any kind of help is greatly appreciated. If it helps, i’m trying to perfect this “hole” on the north country baby sock pattern on dpn. I figure it’s better to practice on a basic pattern. thanks.

I’m not a sock knitter, but when I do seamless top down sweaters, I pick up an extra stitch or two where there’s going to be a gap. Do it the same as you would a m1 inc - pick up the yarn between stitches and knit it tbl, so the twist will close up.

When you first start picking up stitches is where the hole usually is. I pick up close to the needle then continue with the rest. Knit the first two stitches together on the next round and maybe through the back loop to twist them so they’ll be tighter.

You can also just duplicate stitch over the hole if it continues to be a problem. I’ve done that before.
