Where to M1

Hi all,
I just wondered if I could have a bit of advice for shaping my jumper sleeves as my pattern is a bit vague. My pattern is as follows:
Next Row (WS): Rib1, (M1, rib3) 4 times, (M1, rib2) 8 times, (M1, rib3) 5 times, M1,
rib1.
I know its my preference if I M1L or M1R but I wondered how many stitches in would be best to make the stitch and if I should change it depending on if its rib 1,2 or 3.
Also is it standard to M1 on both sides or just RS?

Thanks so much again everyone for your help. I’m not the most experience knitter and I’ve taken on a pattern which is proving a bit ambition so thank you all for your continues help and support

The pattern is telling you where to place the M1. Probably best to go with the distribution given in the pattern. It’s likely that the pattern stitch is going to change at this point from a rib to the main pattern.
Sometimes there are increases on the WS but most of the time they are on the RS. It really depends on the pattern though.

Where are you getting that info from? Maybe I’m just not reading it right as I’m not used to reading patterns yet but the pattern instructions are exactly as I typed them and I can’t see anywhere where it says to place the M1s or which side?

The pattern is telling you to rib 1, then M1, rib3, M1, rib 3, M1, rib 3, M1 rib 3, and then continue with the repeat of (M1, rib2) x8. That’s telling you to place the increase between the first and second rib stitch then between the 4th and 5th rib stitch and so on.
If you are working 1x1 rib you would k1, M1, p1, k1, p1, M1, k1 …

Thanks that’s super helpful. As I say not very used to reading patterns and I’d assumed I was making 1 stitch per row over multiple rows rather than multiple stitches in the same row.

Thanks again
