Where do i go from here? (v basic Q)

I intend to do this pattern…

But for now i have just done the gauge…
11 stitches by 14 rows…

My gauge measures 2.5 inches(wide) X 3 inches(long) … not quite the 4 inches i should have (my needles are smaller)

So what do i do now? I presume i have to massively increase the amount of stitches i cast on, then keep knitting till i reach 38 inches of scarf??

If your gauge swatch is that much smaller, you need to up your needle size by at least a few.

Yes, larger needles would be good, but you could work with the ones you have. It looks like your gauge is about half what the pattern calls for, so you could double the number of stiches and see where that gets you. Don’t worry about the row gauge, just knit until it’s 38" then bind off.

Cool, thanks both of you… i think i will have a go with the needles i have, because its good practice to adjust my pattern.
