Where did all the stitches go

I’m making a sweater knit in the round from bottom to top. I’ve completed front and back, grafted the shoulders together and need to pick up sts around the sleeve to make the sleeves. I carefully knitted the last st and slipped the first st to make a nice chain edge on the selvedges where I now need to pick up the sts.

My dilemma: The nice chain edge has one chain for every two rows. If I just pick up those chains I only have about half the number of sts needed to be picked up to complete the sleeve. How do I go about picking up enough sts? Where do I find them? I tried picking up in the front and the back of each of those chains, but really don’t like the way it looks. Any ideas?

Go in one from the chained edge so you can get a stitch in each stitch. It will look nice–just make sure you stay in the same column of stitches all the way around.
