Where am I going wrong on this pattern?

I’m knitting the “Jacques Cousteau Hat” free from Ravelry and I am having a problem. The directions say…

Cast on 120/140 sts. in the round. Then I did the rib work for the 8 inches with no problems. Now I’m at the decrease part which consist of a KKS (meaning knit two stitches and then slip the first over the second). Now the problem begins here.
"Work 26/31 sts. in rib pattern, then KKS, place marker, knit 28/33 sts. in rib pattern, KKS, place marker, knit 28/33 sts. in rib pattern, KKS, place marker, Knit 28/33 sts. in rib pattern, KKS, place marker, purl 2.
The following decrease rows:
Work to two sts. of marker, KKS, repeat from. Decrease until 12 sts. remain. then break off etc.
I’m doing the small size which had a cast on of 120 stitches. But if you add up the "work 26, 28 x 3 times and 2 purl it does NOT add up to 120 sts. What am I not getting? The numbers don’t add up either for the larger size hat. Is it me or is it the pattern? Over a thousand people have knit this hat and yet I don’t get it. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.:aww:

It does come out right, you’re forgetting to count the 2 dec sts which are done 4 times. You work 26 sts, then the dec (which is 28 sts), then 28 sts and decs 3 more times and that’s a total of 118 sts, and end with p2 which makes 120 sts.

Thank you…I was not doing the decrease right. The hat is now finished. My dh loves it. Thanks again for your help.:woohoo:
