When to start bind off?

i’m almost at the end of my first project (scarf). the bind off video is helpful, but what’s a good way to judge when to start the bind off row? i want to get in as many rows as i can, but not run out of yarn when binding off. (scarf is 18 sts, 5.5 inches wide)
thanks!

If you know how much it takes to knit a row; figure on having 3 to 4 times that much left when you start your bind off.

thanks! it didn’t take quite that much, but i at least felt safe that i had a little extra.

I usually find that it takes about 1½ times as much as a single row. Or about 3-4 times the width. Your width here is 5½" so it probably took about 18-20".
