When the pattern and the stitch count don’t match

I’m making a Celtic square throw for my nephew’s wedding gift. I would say I’m an intermediate knitter. The pattern: cast in 64 stitches.
The graph: end with 96 stitches. There are 8 lifted increases. There are 24 no action boxes. I followed the directions, stitch for box, and I don’t have enough stitches I’m 9 stitches short. Here it is:

K2, P5, LLI, (grey box x2),RLI, P4, LLI, (grey box x2); RLI, P 15, (grey box x4) P6, P4 to center, and mirror left side of the pattern. What am I doing wrong? Making this gift was for the joy of it - not all this frustration! Please help me🙏🫶🏻

What is the name of your pattern and designer or source?
The row you quote does have 4 increases. Do the succeeding chart rows have any increases, yarn overs, lifted increases or any other kind?
The LLI and RLI flanking the grey boxes x2 will fill in those grey boxes but I don’t see any other increases across that row (even considering the mirrored section). Maybe knowing the pattern name will help.

First and foremost, thank you for your help.

This is what happened:

When all else fails, read the designer’s Instructions! I learned to make two-stitch LI’s. In her instruction, she uses the left leg of the preceding stitch! I learned to k1 first to make the increase. Same theory on the RLI, left the yarn, ktbl, and then k or p the remaining part of the stitch on the needle to complete the RLI.

This designer lifts in both directions adding just those 2 stitches. I hope I’ve explained this well. This method of making the increases was a complete novelty to me, but I really like it🤗

These are my favorite increases. Yes, when something doesn’t make sense reading every word of the intro and notes is often the key.
Glad you’ve figured it out. Hope all goes smoothly from now on!
