When changing colours: tying off at edges and changing yarns

Forgive me but I cannot seem to find the thread. One of the luvverly mods suggested to another poster (asking about making a striped scarf) that they don’t tie off but carry the yarn up (to avoid loads of weaving in of ends). I asked a question about that and the creation of a ‘loop’ of yarn at the side that this would leave. I would not do this if I was making a broader stripe but I can see the sense if say you’re only doing one or two rows of another colour, but, that ‘loop’ bothers me

Is that avoided in some manner? If i was making something with panels I can see the sense in doing this as the loop could be slipped between the seams…but…on an item like a scarf???

If you hold the yarn you’re not using up against the side of the scarf with the new yarn–basically bring the new color up under the old strand, it kind of holds the carried color close to the edge of the scarf to prevent a loop. You will still see the color, but not as much.

I always think of you as the executive sheep (ewe) when I see your av.
Thanks, I see what you mean.

If it bothered you, you could use a Russian join - no ends, no visible carrying.

And a Russain join is…?
