When a project is finished, is it necessary to wash it?

Hi my question is, I finished a baby blanket and I would like to know if I now wash it before giving it as a gift and then press it a little? I would think so, but just thought I would ask.

I think it is a good idea- I usually wash things before I gift them. It makes them softer, makes them smell good, and also that way I know it is clean. All that time of the yarn running through my fingers, sitting all over my house, etc…

Thanks…

I don’t think you want to press it, per se. If it’s acrylic a wash and machine dry should shape it up unless you need to block out the corners/edges. You may want to just steam it a bit without the iron touching the fabric. But “pressing” could mess it up big time.

Before I dressed my newborn in anything I had I washed it first with gentle baby detergent whether it was clean/washed or not. So, may be the person you give it to will wash it anyway.

As for adults, I wouldn’t bother washing gifts when I’ve kept that yarn clean. Also, remember that some people are sensitive to certain smells and cleaning agents.

Hope that helped.
