… between a hank and a skein? Are they the same thing, or is there a real difference?
What's the difference
Hanks generally need to be wound after you buy them, skeins do not.
So with a hank, how would you wind it yourself? Is there a special machine of some sort that you need to use?
If you’re buying a lot of hanks of wool, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a swift and ball winder.
You can wind a hank yourself, but you just have to be careful that either someone is holding the yarn around their hands, or you have it placed around a chair, or your feet, or basically anything that’s going to hold it in one place. Then you can wind it by hand.
also, couldn’t u use the method that amy demonstrates in that video? (center yarn pull, yarn center pull, pull yarn center, or something) :rofling:
Absolutely. The winding of the ball isn’t the difficult part, it’s just important that you don’t tangle the hank or you’ll be untangling it for days. It needs to be stretched between two ‘things’.
Speaking of tangled balls of yarn, how do I untangle a ball of yarn? I think mine is a skein, because when I got it, it was already wound, but now it’s REALLY tangled. Any advice?
Patience and determination.
Thanks!
I think I’ll need a LOT of patience with this baby. I’m doing a scarf for DD (dad, not daughter) as a surprise. Even though winter’s almost over, I’m still going to do it so he can have it for next winter, the winter after, etc.
I do amy’s center-pull balls around a thick marker (the base of it) instead of my thumb. It keeps the hole in the center nice and open, and also keeps my thumb from losing all sensation. Plus, if the phone rings in the middle of my ball-winding, I don’t drag yarn all over the house to get it. :rofling:
Around here we call that “yarn vomit.” I just try to find an end and then work backwards slowly to pull it out. Sometimes this can actually be soothing. Put on some good music, make sure no kids (human or animal) need you, get comfortable adn zone out
