What's the best yarn for beginners?

I wondered whatwas the best yarn, in everyone’s opinion, for beginners. I started out with acrylic and decided that it slipped and unraveled too much. Then,a few woman in the knitting group suggested cotton yarn. I bought some of that but decided it wasn’t elastic enough and it was really hard to knit with also. So, yesterday I went out and bought some blended yarn that’s a blend of acrylic and cotton and so far it’s nice. So, can anyone share some insight into their favorite yarns and good ideas for me? Thanks so much for the help.

I recommend a worsted weight wool or wool blend yarn for beginners. Lion Brand Lion Wool or Wool-Ease would be great for you to start with. Cotton is NOT a good yarn for beginners, and you found out why. It doesn’t stretch and it has a tendency to be a little too slippery. Sorry they suggested that for you.

Plain kitchen cotton type yarn is difficult to knit with, but the blends like CottonEase or Bernat Denimstyle are better. Not all acrylics are alike, I never had a problem with it slipping.

I agree with Silver. In addition, I think it helps for the yarn to be a lighter color. It helps you to be able to see what you’re doing.

A variegated color yarn helps too, because there would be only a few stitches between color changes and you can see the stitches more distinctly.

Select a color with a strong contrast to the color of the needles. It’s easier to see the stitches.

Also, I would suggest a wool or wool blend. And, go for stuff a little cheaper, because if you mess up, than the monetary loss isn’t that great.
