What yarn & needle size for silver's sock class?

I’m a newbie and am working up the nerve to tackle socks. After reading a lot of threads here and shopping my local yarn shops I have questions.

What yarns do you recommend? I don’t want to handwash. And what size needles? I knit sorta loose, I guess. I’m sure that if I’m careful I can knit tightly. Is that what I should concentrate on doing? Knitting tightly? I’ve read a bunch of the posts here about size of needles for socks and although the yarn I like recommends a size 2 needle, that might be too big??? You guys seem to like either a 0 or a 1 for knitting socks.

I’m looking at the Online Supersockes yarn to try at first. This is it:

Please help. Thank you for all the help you’ve already given  I’ve been reading your wisdom for the past few days. You guys here are fantastic!!

I knit a pair using Silver’s tutorial with cascade 200 superwash on size 7s.

Size 7’s!! Wow, that sounds big! How’d they come out? Did you use bulky yarn?

Any other recommendations?

Thanks!!
Monica

This thread might help you out. I’m still a newbie sock knitter. I just ordered the book, Sensational Knitted Socks because I’ve heard so much about it. Anyways, I’ve done Kroy on #3’s. They are nice but a bit thick.

I read the following:here

“Typically, 2.0 to 2.5 mm needles are used for fingering weight yarn and 2.5 to 3.0 mm needles are used for sport weight yarn.)”

Over on Knitty they say:

“Proper” sock yarn gauge is 28 or 30 stitches across 4 inches/10cm on 2-3mm needles. If you want to be able to wear your socks in your everyday shoes, you’ll need to use one of these yarns. Don’t be afraid. It may seem like a lot of stitches to work to fit around your foot, but it’s still fewer than the sleeve of the average adult-sized sweater.
I hope someone else chimes in!

Nikic, thanks that swatch site will be a big help! Like everyone I’d rather just jump in and start knitting my socks but taking the time to “swatch” will be well worth it. Thanks again!

I tried to click into the knitty thread you posted but got this response: “The topic or post you requested does not exist”. I hadn’t been to knitty before so maybe I need to poke around there too.

Anyway, thank you for the swatching tips!!

Gosh, I’m so sorry!

This is the link

It’s Knitty’s “Socks 101” article. It’s under the Features tab. I think you would like it, too.

Yep, that one works  Thank you for sending it on. Looks like a wealth of information! Now to find the time to relax and read it all

Have a great weekend!
