I need to add 6 cast on at the end of a knitted row. I have never done this - what type of cast on do I use???

You have a few choices here. You can use a knitted on, cable, or backward loop. All work fine, but backward loop is harder to knit into and cable or knitted on can be tight so keep them loose when you use them. Videos of the techniques are on the cast on page of videos linked above.
