So I’m going to make my first socks. :knitting:
I’ve looked at the videos and have decided I don’t want to use a cable.
So what length DPNs would people recomend?
I don’t usually use DPN anymore , but when I did I preferred about 6".
I have these but I’ve never knitted an entire sock on DPNs. I use them when I need needles smaller than sz. 0. I do 2@time on magic loop.
Most of my sock DPN are 6". I had to search long and hard for my #1 8" set for a doily.
two at a time sounds good, maybe I need to some more research!
If you’ve never done socks I think maybe doing one pair with magic loop (separately) to learn the technique first.
Good idea. No need to double the fun of learning a new technique or two.
Congrats on wanting to knit socks! I love them so much I never seem to make time for other projects and normally have 2 or 3 pairs on the go at any one time!! Shout if you need any help.
I use 6" dpn’s. I prefer the bamboo ones in general for their lightness and how they feel. But for any project smaller than a US2 (2.5mm) I use metal needles as the bamboo ones bend alarmingly! I’m scared of snapping one and ruining my knitting!
Well i’ve cast on my socks! I found I had some DPN’s 7inch long, but they are not too bad. Have done about 3 inches so far, I’ll keep you updated. Thanks for all the advise everybody.
I get mixed up when I try magic loop!!! I use 8 inch circulars and switch to 6 inch double points…I think I would like the magic loop but need to take a class!!!
I
my 5" KnitPicks DPNs. I knit loosely so the aluminum is a must. Any longer than that and I feel like my socks/gloves are lost among the points. Plus, I like using at least 5 DPNs so that means fewer stitches per needle. (Should make a new abbrev. for that :SPN:)
I finished them! Not too bad, a bit of a stretched stitch at the beginning of the gusset, but otherwise they are OK.
You can also do socks on a teeny circular needle size 9 inches. I have done them on DPNs, and I use DPNs for closing hats (and sock TOES) but I love having all the stitches on a teeny needle; easier to carry in knitting bag and just easier for me overall. Most people love Magic Loop, but there’s something about it spatially that just doesn’t ‘click’ for me. I know if I practiced it, I would get it, but the little 9 inch needles are just super simple for me.
Bottom line: try a few things and go with what’s best for you personally!
Oh! Oh! I know how to fix that!. :woohoo: LOL Pardon my excitement, I just did this on a pair that is just making it through the end of it’s second winter. Take a bit of waste yarn and do a few duplicate stitches and make sure you go around the stitch(es) involved to close up the little holes. HTH I feel like a kid that just made a new discovery and has to tell everybody. :roflhard:
