What length circulars?

Hi all,
I’m making a shawl as my next project.

The pattern is worked on circular needles beginning from the long edge (200cm) and decreasing to the point.

My question is… how long should the cable connecting the two needles be, for a piece that begins so large and gets so small?

Welcome to KH!
It depends on the number of stitches and the weight of yarn or gauge. This site gives a simple formula and also a link to a table. Although the table doesn’t go up to 200cm you can use the 100cm entries as a guide.

Is this going to be your own pattern or someone else’s published pattern?

Oh, that’s amazing, thank you!

It is someone else’s pattern; paintbox yarns.

I’m working on a blanket that has 278 sts in worsted on a 40"/101 cm cable. My expectation is that the blanket is appr. 72"/182 cm wide. Does that help? (I had to look up cm for the inch measurements so the numbers maybe be a little different from what you’d recognize.)

I have changed cables. If thr cable gets too unruly, remove one tip and rpelace it with a stop. Then put that needle onto a shorter cable with a stop at the other end. Then knit your stitches onto the shorter cable. One the stitches are on the shorter cable, replace the stop with your needle tip.

Most patterns specify a cable length. Does yours not give this? And as @Pawsable says, you can always change cables partway through, assuming that you have interchangeables. If you have fixed circs, you can just knit onto another shorter needle.

Most patterns do, but sadly this didn’t
