I usually use what is sometime referred to as theidiot discoth patternand just make the blanket out of a pretty varrigated baby yarn (washable) and make it at least 42 inches on a side.
I made a few of these and threaded a ribbon through the edging. Gave it a nice finished look.

I’m gonna second the Big Bad Baby Blanket from S&B! (I made the one in the 2nd link) It was pretty mindless to work, I counted once and put stich markers on so I never had to count again. I had started a cute striped number over 2 years ago that never got finished, moved it from the needles onto a stitch holder so I could work this one and the Big Bad Baby Blanket was finished in about 3 weeks. (well, 3 weeks of working time…5 weeks in all!)
I used plain ol’ Red Heart and it turned out a nice weight, look and is keeping baby nice and toasty!
My favorite pattern is a mitered corner blanket. It’s easy, unique, and is always a square when you’re finished.
On circular needles, CO 3
Row 1: K1, YO, K1, YO, K1
Row 2 and all even numbered rows: knit evenly across
Row 3: K2, YO, K1, YO, K to end
Row 5: K3, YO, K1, YO, K to end
Keep increasing the number of sts to the YO at the beginning of each odd numbered row until the blanket is as large as you’d like it to be. Add different colors when ever you’d like, or just use one color or a verigated yarn for an interesting effect.
Lizzie,
That’s a cool pattern! But wouldn’t you have to do some sort of decreases when you get to the point where you’d added enough stitches for the first 2 sides to be the length you want? :??
:??
Thanks,
Diane
Yes you do. You’d K1, yo, k2tog, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, yo, k1.
An easier one is - CO 3 or 5, knit 2 rows,
k2, yo, knit to end - repeat this on every row, then,
k2 yo, k2tog, knit to end until you get down to the same number of stitches you CO, k 2tog, k1, turn, k2tog (may have to do this twice if you CO 5 sts).

Actually, you don’t!
A link to the blog this came from was listed elsewhere on this site, and the blog contained a pic. It was someone’s dishcloth pattern.
The yo increases create a diagonal stripe through the center of the piece, and when you bind off & do a bit of shaping, voila, it’s a square! Pretty neat!
Diane
Nope, that’s the beauty of it. Because the increases are in the center, it makes a mitered square and when you run out of yarn, it’s done.http://sasw.blogspot.com/2005/01/dishcloths.html
Oh! That’s different… Thanks.
