What is this called?

I was recently surfing Ravelry for interesting ideas to finish my shawl (dark multicoloured).

It has a large panel of garter stitch I’d like to spruce up.

I came across this piece created through the Great Lakes Road Trip and loved the white line added to the top of other stitching.

In all my searching, I can’t figure out what this stitching might be called :pray:.

Do you have any idea how it’s accomplished? I have some yarn and beads waiting… :laughing:

I could be wrong but it looks like slip stitch. It can be worked with needle and yarn (sewing into the knit fabric) or worked with a crochet hook (hook on right side of fabric and you can see where you are working, working yarn on wrong side of fabric).

I’ve used both to embellish my son’s sweater with detail.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I’ll look for video on “surface slipped stitch”…

Here’s what I found…

It’s crochet! (I knit and sew)
No wonder I couldn’t visualize it. :sweat_smile::100::tada::notes:

Hmm… I think in sewing it’s called chain stitch. Embroidery type sewing.
It looks the same but doesn’t need a crochet hook, that is if you don’t have one.

Yes, sorry, my mistake, it is called chain stitch for sewing. The result is the same.

Whichever way you work it, it will be an original detail on your shawl. Hope you’ll share a pic when it’s done.
