what is meant by " knit forward and backwards but not in rounds".?

It then tells me for the 1st row - to knit 3,*purl 2,knit 2 and keep going to the end where I knit 1.
and 2nd row is the opposite of the 1st row instrtuctions.

All it’s saying is that you will not be working in the round, you will be working “flat”. In other words, at the end of each row you will turn your work before proceding.

do you mean one row will be the 1st row is RS and the 2nd row is WS? I use circular needles so don’t really understand what you mean.

you don’t connect the stitches, it is just like working with 2 needles, when you are done one row you drop that needle and turn your work, if you were knitting in the round, you would just keep going around in a circle, not turning your work

Circular needles can be used to `knit in the round’ making a tube. But they can also be used like regular needles, which is what this pattern means. CO,turn the needle and begin the first row. When you get to the end, turn again and do the 2nd row. So yes, the 1st row may be the RS and the 2nd row the WS. It doesn’t matter that you’re using circulars, just don’t make a tube.

I think I know what you all mean now… when knitting after knitting the last stitch of one row, don’t continue knit the 1st stitch of the next row - thereby joining the 2ends of the fabric together… instead turn to knit the the material onto the other end of the circular needle. Right?

Yep, you’ve got it!
