Hi, have just started knitting again and am stuck on a pattern for a baby cardigan. The pattern in the cardigan doesnt line up as it should and I think it is my interpretation of the pattern?
The pattern is worked over 18 rows
The row I am struggling with is row 5 and the word time ?
I am following the second number in the brackets.
K3 (1, 1, 4, 2, 2) [y.fwd., sl1, k1, psso, k3] 0, (1,0,0,1,0) time * k2tog.,yfwd, k1,yfwd., sl1, k1,psso, k3, rpt from * to last 0(1,1,0,1,1) time, [yfwd., sl1,k1, psso.] 0 (0,1,0,0,1) time, K0 ( 0,1,1,k2).
Im also not sure that i fully understand the different brackets!
Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
It’s a good idea to circle the number for your size in case you haven’t done that already.
This is the row for the second size in parentheses. Anytime there is a 0 for your size, skip that direction and go to the next.
It looks like there may be an error in the row.
K1 * k2tog.,yfwd, k1,yfwd., sl1, k1,psso, k3, rpt from * to last 1 time, [yfwd., sl1,k1, psso.] 1 time, K1.
Maybe this last should be “to the last 3sts”? Does your pattern give a stitch count near this row?
The parentheses are marking of the different stitch numbers for the sizes in the pattern. The brackets give you the stitch pattern which may or may not be repeated depending on size. In this row, the brackets really aren’t needed.
Hi, thank you for your support.
The pattern was from Etsy by purlspatterns. There is no name to the pattern. It was justva search for baby cardigans. The picture showed 6 cardigan/jumpers.
I have circled the number for my required size as i was getting confused.
None of the reviews for the pattern has picked up any errors.
There isnt a stitch count but the number of cast on stitches was 55.
Maybe this pattern?

The repeat is 8sts possibly repeated 6 times. With one stitch before the repeat and 3sts following that adds up to 52sts. If the 8sts are repeated 7 times that’s a total of 60sts. Does the stitch count change at all after the cast on?
Hi, thanks for help. Yes thats the one. The pattern stitch count reduces to 41 stitches when starting the shape armholes over 7 rows ( decreasing by 1 stitch at each end of the 7 rows).
The only other change is a change of needles from 3 1/4 at the end of ribbing to 4mm needles
Can you quote the first 4 rows please? These are the row before the 5th which you’ve already given us. A photo of just those 4 rows will work too.
One change that will work with 55sts is:
K1 * k2tog.,yfwd, k1,yfwd., sl1, k1,psso, k3, rpt from * to. For the last repeat, [K2 tog, yfwd., k1, yfwd,sl1,k1, psso.] 1 time, K1.
ETA the missing yfwd in the final partial repeat.
Row 1: right side K to end
Row 2: p to end
Row 3: K3 yfwd,sl1,k1, psso, k6 to last 4 sts, yfwd, sl1, k1, psso, k2
Row 4: p to end
In row 3 I have just given you the appropriate stitches for the size i am making. Hope thats okay.
Thanks for the suggestion for the change for 55 stitches. I will give that a go
See if that makes sense of the pattern. I’ll give it a try too. You might try that out on a swatch first just to spare your good yarn.
A lifeline is a good idea too for a trial like this.
Great advice, thank you.
That seems to work at least as far as the first 6 rows.
On the left is the changed section of the pattern.
(I missed a yarn forward at the end. I’ve added it into the row 5 in post #5 above. Sorry about that!)
This is the pattern with the yfwd add in at red arrow.
Genius thank you for your time!
See how it goes and let us know. It’s an adorable little sweater.
Hey, the pattern is working out well
That’s the best news! Thanks for letting us know. We’d love to see a photo when you finish.
