My baby blanket is coming along beeeUtifully - HUGE thank you to all the wonderful people who have answered my questions and given me the confidence to go for it!!! cloud9
I’m changing stitches every 15 rows or so to make it look funky - all in the same color, but with different textures. Yum! :yay:
My questions is - what do the backs of cables look like? I’d like to try some cabling and want to know if the backs look okay, and the blanket will end up double-sided, or if it will look like the back of something and not very presentable.
Ooh, then let me ask this: what’s with the “right” and “wrong” side of fabrics? How do you know what side you’re on? I just keep on knitting… Does it make a difference?
Thank you, lovely people!!!
(P.S. If I have several questions - should I ask them all in different threads, or all in the same thread? Thanks!)
If the cables are at the edges of the blanket then they could pull in the sides at each twist of the cable. To prevent this, I always use a border with my cables–usually 1-3 knit stitches, 2-6 purls, the cable stitches, 2-6 purls, and the 1-3 knit stitches in each row. (the purl stitches take up {even out} most of the tension from the cable twists).

LOL, hope my visuals help a bit (have not the foggiest how to post a picture)!
The back of a cable doesn’t look anywhere as nice as the front, so I wouldn’t use it for a double-sided item.
Which leads into your question about right side/wrong side…some pattern stitches just look good from one side-- it’s pretty obvious after the first few rows, but til then it can be confusing, especially if you’re working a new pattern for the first time. Personally, I keep track with a safety pin–i pin it horizontally thru’ the fabric so that the main body of the pin is on the right side.
I made this one http://fortheloveofyarn.com/Issues/07Winter/patterns/winter07_pearlsblanket.shtml and there is a wrong side to it definitely but it doesn’t take away from the blanket If you weren’t to keen having a wrong side on your blanket I would google a search for reversible cables knit pattern (a bunch of patterns came up when I did) as well as use Silvers’s pattern (so pretty) Also, I didn’t notice any pulling in the blanket I knit because of the cables but the cables weren’t on the edges… I would think if you put the cables are at the edge of the blanket it might tighten up just like CountryKitty said but I am still a novice knitter.

Ooh, that’s too complicated for me  Could you explain that?
And about that Palindrome scarf - looks way cool - but I don’t understand the pattern:
Row 1 : (RS) K2, P2 across
Rows 2, 3 & 4: Repeat Row 1
Row 5: (RS) K2, P2, C8F Repeat to last 4 sts, K2, P2
Row 6: Repeat Row 1
Repeat rows 1-6 for desired length, ending with row 4.
Bind off in K2, P2 pattern.
Weave in the ends.
Flip scarf over and over and marvel at it’s reversibility!
KEY VERY IMPORTANT for reversible cables!
C8F: Slip 4 sts to a cable needle and hold to front, K2, P2, then K2, P2 from the cable needle.
The cable doesn’t look like it’s made with eight stitches - is it? Or am I misunderstanding what C8F means? (What does it stand for, anyway? I think I understand what must be done though.)
C8F means that you will do your cable over 8 sts total by doing the twist to the front, then follow the explanation given for how to knit them. It’s a shorthand way of telling you how many sts are involved. C6B would mean the cables are done over 6 sts, but hold 3 to the back, knit 3 sts, then knit the 3 that were held in back. This pattern is what I meant by doing the cables in ribbing (k2, p2) so they’ll be reversible. You could definitely follow the palindrome pattern and do an 8 st cable, that would work out very well.
If you do incorporate a cable into your blanket, you might want it to be more than 15 rows. If you use the Palindrome pattern, you need 6 rows to get 1 cable cross. at 15 rows, you’ll only have 2 cable crosses. Well, that might be fine I guess; if it were me I’d want 3 or 4 cable crosses. I love cables!
