What does "make one" mean?

I noticed on that on several patterns, including htis one:

there is an M in the knitting chart for ‘make one’.

Even with the description: “Make one by lifting strand in between stitch just worked and the next stitch, knit in to back of this thread.” I’m unsure what this means.

Any additional help/advice would be much appreciated.

It’s an increase. Go up to the videos and click on increases. You’ll see several M1’s. The one you are describing is M1R and M1L.

I also am having trouble with M1, so here I am trying to find out.

I think I have worked it out and it means to “make another or extra stitch”. I am trying to make my first pair of felted toddler socks and if I can’t work out the pattern I am going to go into the knitting shop here and find out tomorrow!

I will try to “Make One Stitch” and see how we go.

It’s a specific way to do an increase though. You can’t always just substitute a knit front and back for it.

My pattern calls for “Make 1 over (M1o) by knitting into the horizontal thread between 2 sts.” For some reason, this isn’t clicking with me. I went to this site’s glossary but they don’t have M1o. Is it called by another name/term?

OldSkool - it looks like it is the same thing as a M1. Not sure why she put the ‘o’ in it.

Thanks Marilyn for the input, but I have one more question: should I go with a M1T, M1A, M1L, or M1R?

Probably the M1L or M1R, it won’t matter really.

The “make 1 over” is different from the “Make 1” not only in how you do them, but how they look when you’re done.

In a M1o, you simply pick up the thread between 2 sts and work it. This result ends up being like you worked a YO from the previous row which leaves a small but visible hole in your work, giving it a lacy look.

In a M1, you pick up the thread between 2 sts and twist it either left or right before you work it. This action pulls the sts closer together so there is no hole and the new st nestles between the original sts almost invisibly.

Does that make more sense to you?
