Hello,
This site has become my knitting best friend since I don’t really know anyone who knits and this place has answered all my questions up until now.
I am making a baby bonnet and i’m stuck on a certain row. It calls for k1(p3, leave yarn at front to M1, sl 1 k2tog, psso, yon)twice, P3, *k6,yf, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yf, k6,(p3, leave yarn at front to M1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yon)twice, p3, rep from *to last st, k1
ok, i understand M1 means make 1 and yon is yarn over, and leave in front is self explanatory, but it seems that every time i do this row i end up with extra stitches. i don’t know if my leaving in front to make one is the problem or my yarn over is the problem maybe? because the yarn over is after a knit and before a pearl is there a different way to do it? i hope my post isn’t too confusing, since i am so confused. lol
M 1 is an increase; sometimes it’s used for a specific one, or just in general to make an increase. In this pattern “leave yarn at front to M1” is like a YO, by leaving the yarn in front then working the next st - s1 k2tog, psso - it creates an extra st. The yon is another YO done from a knit to a purl. You shouldn’t have extra sts as the yarn in front and yon increases are balanced by the double dec - s1 k2tog, psso. Are you interpreting “(p3, leave yarn at front to M1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yon) twice” as yon twice? It should be everything in the parentheses done twice, not just the yon.
It’s probably your YO. You need to make sure that if it isn’t being done as an increase that you keep the sts the same. At first your YO will look like an extra st, but when you do the next row just make sure to slide the YO part off and don’t knit it as an extra so that you won’t have increases and it will leave you with a small hole or the pattern might have you knit2tog in subsequent rows.
You can decrease the YO after you do it, but I always do it the next row. It seems to help me with my tension.
No no, no… It is an extra stitch, but you don’t drop it off the needle on the next row… The 2 YOs on the row are offset by the double dec of slip 1, k2tog, pass slip st over. So each pattern repeat gains 2 sts, but also loses 2 sts.
Thank you for taking time to reply =D i am doing the entire () over. i think the YO is the problem, i’m going to try again paying close attention to it. just wanted to make sure that the m1 wasn’t something different then the yf.
yeah!! i think i was making silly mistakes like wrapping the YO wrong adding a stitch and forgetting to psso once, i finally got it, now i have another little ?, should i be slipping as to knit or purl? i wish i could make the picture of the bonnet bigger to really see the pattern to help me out, but i can’t seem too. oh well.
