What does ‘keeping the pattern correct as set mean’?

Ok, so I know what it means in theory, it’s the practice I’m struggling with. The row was 106 stitches long. The pattern was k2 p1 k4 p1 k2tog to last 8, p1 k4 p1 k2. I’ve done that row. Now it says to keep pattern correct as set for 11 rows, but I have no idea what to do. I know that I’ll need to lose some stitches but I can’t figure out which ones and where, and I don’t seem to be able to ‘read my knitting’. Help!!

Welcome to KH!
What is the name of the pattern? Can you quote exactly what it says after the " k2 p1 k4 p1 k2tog to last 8, p1 k4 p1 k2"?

What do next few row of pattern say?

It’s a pattern that came with a monthly subscription for a country beanie. The pattern says:

Dec row 1: K2, P1, K4, P1, K2tog, rep from to last 8 sets, P1, K4, P1,K2. 94sts.
Keep pattern correct as set, work 11 rows, ending with a WS row.

If the stitch count is supposed to decrease (i.e. at the top of the beanie) then repeat Dec row 1. Keep the main body of the pattern correct even though the decrease will alter the stitch number.
If the stitch count is supposed to stay the same then repeat the row without the decreases.

So does that mean I just decrease the number of * to * repeats I do, and everything else stays the same?

The number of sts between the repeats will decrease but the number of repeats will be the same. Keep going until you have 94sts.
Is this the top of the beanie.

Yes it’s the top. I’ve already done the first decrease row so I’m already down to 94 stitches. I just don’t know what to do next.

K2, P1, K4, P1, K2tog, rep from to last 8 sts, P1, K4, P1,K2.

Repeat this row. The number of sts between the first 8 and last 8 sts will decrease with each row.

If there is a row before this that doesn’t have a decrease, it might be paired with this row. You might be repeating these 2 rows, the right side row and the wrong side row.
Often the decrease row on a hat comes every other row. Also, since this pattern is in rows and not knit in the round, it’s likely that there are directions for the wrong side row.
