The pattern says to needle three, k1 … What does it mean to needle?

I’ve never heard the term “needle three” is there a key of some sort that tells you what the different stitches are?

There is not a key. Sometimes the pattern will say needle or it will give needle with a number.

Are you knitting in the round on DPNs? Is it possible they are breaking up the pattern by which needle you are working?

Gloves and socks are soemthings written out this way.
