What do you use leftover sock yarns for?

What do you use leftover sock yarn for? I have lots of leftover sock yarns, not enough for another sock but too much to just chuck in the bin. I started casting on 70 stitches on a size 4 needle and knit till that little ball of sock yarn runs out, join another ball and keep doing the same until the squares 10 inches and bind off. I have a 5 stitch border on each side and top and bottom have a 5-garter stich border. When I have enough squares knitted I will use black sock yarn to connect the squares into rows and make a car blanket out of them.

Good idea! The colors are lovely worked in squares.

A friend crochets these turtles with leftover sock yarn.

That turtle is too cute!

I don’t make socks so I don’t have left over sock yarn.

I love that turtle and would make one if crochet didn’t kill my wrist these days. Gotta work on how to manage without so much wrist involvement. I’ve made this

@Creations Sock yarn isn’t just for socks! I’ve used it for sweaters.

I friend of mine made a mitered square blanket with her leftover sock yarn. Or I should say, she IS making one–it seems to be never-ending, as she also keeps making socks! I think her squares are about 1 1/2".

Well, that cat is too cute too!

GG, I have made a sweater with sock yarn and although I love how it looks and it fits fantastically (very stretchy but fitted) I discovered the yarn is too scratchy to have by my skin and have never worn it. I had more than another sweater worth of yarn which I gave away. So really what I do with my left over sock yarn is give it away.

Most sock yarns have nylon added, so they hold up better to wearing. I can see how it would not feel so good on arms and torso.

It was 75% Wool, 25% Polyamide. I don’t know what polyamide is to be honest, and I think the wool is scratchy for me. Good to learn about different fibres but it would have been nicer in something softer.

That’s a great idea! I usually use leftover sock yarn for mosaic blankets, patchwork scarves, or small accessories like mitts and hats. Making squares and joining them like you’re doing is perfect for a cozy, colorful blanket.

Hi, I’m still pretty new to knitting socks so don’t have loads left over yet. But I have been using the leftover yarn I do have to make contrasting toes and heels on another pair of socks.

I usually do not use different colored toes and heels on my socks. So I use the leftovers to start a square and knit till it runs out and then I start another color.

That’s a clever way to repurpose leftover sock yarn! Using the squares to create a car blanket is both practical and a great way to showcase the colors.

We travel to Virginia so we need a blanket in the car and can even use it inside the house when we get there. Our youngest son lives in Virginia where he retired from the Navy. Now he works in the Civil Service.

Some people use their left over sock yarn to make the jelly roll blanket, it’s made in strips. It’s pretty cool looking.

I used the basic information from a mitred square blanket pattern to knit individual squares with leftover sock yarn. When there were enough for a good-sized lap blanket, I crocheted them together with a joining stitch and dark grey yarn. As long as the squares were are knit the same way, size wasn’t important.

Wow! That’s a beautiful use of leftover sock yarn. Thank you for the photo.

That is a good looking blanket. Mine will be multi cored also but in solids and some stripes.

:+1: It looks like no pattern needed IMHO.

I just saw this, it’s a knit along from a few years back but could be just the thing for advent knitting to use up sock yarn scraps, and now its just the right ime to gather the materials together!

I almost wish I had lots of sock yarn scraps, my little Mister would love this long hat… oh but I can’t knit in the round so I wouldn’t be able to make it anyway.
