What do they mean by half stitches?

Hi everyone,

I’m just about to start a new pattern.

I’m looking at the tension (gauge) and says:

“5½ stitches and 7 rowsto 10cm over Stocking Stitch (stockinette) using 20mm (US 36) needles.”

How do I do that ½ stitch???

The pattern is Jude from Rowan Bigger Picture and I’m using Rowan Biggy Print Yarn on 20mm (US 36) needles.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.

I’m going for a shower now so I’ll check back on replies when I come out.

They don’t mean you have to knit half a stitch. You knit the pattern for at least 10cm and them measure the middle 10 cm. If you were to knit in gauge for 20 cm instead of 10cm then you have 11 stitches. That’s all it means. When you put your ruler across the stitches you’ll see the 10cm mark is in the middle of the sixth stitch.

Thank you both of you… now I understand! Never have seen that in a pattern before… lol.

Most patterns usually tell you how many sts per 4" or 10cm. That helps include those partial sts, like 19 or 17 sts over 4".
