Hi everyone!
I have recently started my first ever jumper knitting project! Everything was going absolutely perfect until I hit the armhole xD
I’ve managed to start shaping it, casting off some, increasing some, but I’ve now got to an odd part.
“Keeping patt correct, cast off 5 sts at beg of next row 4 sts at beg of foll alt row, then 3 sts at beg of foll 2 lt rows. 13 sts”.
So I get that the pattern should stay the same, and I get that you will be left with 13 sts (maybe!) but what on earth is casting off on ‘foll alt row’?
I’ve seen links of people inc or dec, but not casting off.
I also have to do it again in the next section for casting back on;
“3 sts at beg of next and foll alt row, 4 sts at beg of foll alt row, then 5 sts at beg of foll alt row, finishing on a wrong size row. 28 sts.”
Once I know what I’m doing with these odd ‘foll alt row’ do-das, I ‘should’ be ok haha.
I wouldn’t mind so much, but unfortunately I have 2 arms and therefore will have to do this twice…bah!
Thank you so much in advance!
Welcome to KnittingHelp and congrats on starting your first sweater!
Foll alt row is following alternate rows, in other words, every other row.
Is this the sleeve? I’m a little surprised that the increases seem to be all on one side and aren’t symmetrical.
Sounds like an interesting part of the pattern. can you give us a pattern link or a pattern name?
Hello! Thank you so much for replying
It’s the Wendy Skye Chunky Easy Knit and the number for it is 5573. This is the link to a version of it: https://www.patternfish.com/patterns/10028-wendy-5573-wrap-and-gilet I have opted for the wrap with sleeves rather than the gilet without.
This part is for finishing off the shaping of the right armhole. I’ve already done most of it, it’s just this part to finish up the armhole. I tried to post a link before, but as it was my first post it said I couldn’t haha.
So this part:
“Keeping patt correct, cast off 5 sts at beg of next row 4 sts at beg of foll alt row, then 3 sts at beg of foll 2 alt rows. 13 sts”.
Would mean:
“Cast off 5 stitches @ beginning of the next row, knit one row normally, then in the next row, cast off 4 at the beginning then a regular row, then cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. You’re left with 13 stitches.”
Or have I completely confused myself and anyone else? Haha!
After you’ve finished the right armhole, you carry on knitting until the work is 20.5 inches from cast on edge and then you start the Left armhole and cast off in rib.
For an ‘easy’ knit, it’s kinda confusing xD
OK, you’re almost there. I made one change below, underlined. Good luck with the shaping and post a photo if you’d like when you finish. We’d love to see it.
Cast off 5 stitches @ beginning of the next row, knit one row normally, then in the next row, cast off 4 at the beginning then a regular row, then cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next row, work a row, cast off 3sts, work the next row as usual. You’re left with 13 stitches."
Thank you so much! I shall indeed go ahead and do this when I’m feeling brave haha!
And I’ll see about sorting a picture to let you know how I got on
