Weaving in tail - duplicate stitch

I am a very very new novice. After watching some videos I have made some coasters. I am trying to understand the duplicate stitch when weaving in the tail. I don’t understand how to “follow the stitch.” I can see the ‘V’ in the knit stitch but where the path goes after the first ‘V’ I have no idea.

Any suggestions on figuring this out is much appreciated. I cannot use a different color because I do not know how to knit with two colors.

this link has 4 videos to take you through the whole process: http://www.keep-on-knitting.com/duplicate-stitch.html

also this blog post from knitty.com has step-by-step pictures: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/FEATfall04TT.html

this purlbee.com post has multiple ways to weave in ends, including duplicate stitch (all with pictures, and contrasting yarn so it’s easier to see the steps): http://www.purlbee.com/2011/07/14/weaving-in-your-ends/

knitdarling.com has a blog post where she shows both a picture of the technique, and has a link to a video (picture at http://www.knitdarling.com/blog/5-tips-for-weaving-in-ends and video at http://www.knitdarling.com/videos/how-to-weave-in-ends/)

and staci at verypink.com has multiple videos on weaving in ends at http://verypink.com/category/techniques/weavingends/ . you’ll want the last one on the page, simply called ‘weaving in ends’ where she talks about ‘umbrellas’ and ‘smiles’.

hope that helps!

Thank you soooo much. Have a wonderful Christmas!
