Weaving in ends/closing holes at color change?

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or techniques that they like for weaving in a lot of ends in a way that also closed holes at color changes. I’ve got a blanket with lots of little strands and holes, and I don’t think I’m doing a good job of cleaning it up.

I cross the ends at the color change to make sure the hole closes up and then weave in the ends along the row. You can check that you’ve crossed the yarn in the correct direction if you look to the front side of the blanket and see that the hole is closed before you start weaving in the ends.
