We have a new Intro to Knitting Video on KnittingHelp.com

Hey Everyone,

Amy recently filmed a new tutorial video aimed at beginning knitters and we’ve just finished editing it and added it to the site. It’s 45 minutes in length and is basically a step-by-step walkthrough for the new knitter, leading them through the basics of casting on, knit and purl stitches, identifying stitches on the needle, basic stitch patterns, binding off, etc. It’s the most comprehensive How-To video we have ever produced. And like the majority of the content here at KnittingHelp.com, it’s entirely FREE!

Oh, and as an added bonus, you get to see Amy in this video, and not just her hands.

So if you’re a newish knitter, grab your yarn and needles and work your way through the video. Or, if you know someone who wants to learn to knit, forward this video on to them.

The video is divided into 3 parts:

Part I: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/how-to-knit-basics-beginner-tutorial-part-1

Part II: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/how-to-knit-basics-beginner-tutorial-part-2

Part III: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/how-to-knit-basics-beginner-tutorial-part-3

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Totally awesome! Thanks Amy! Thanks Sheldon!

I pinned the 3 videos in my Pinterest, shared the 3 links on my FB, and tweeted all 3 on my Twitter.

I set up an email to myself, with all three links…and I will be able to forward that email to all of my student knitters! Yay!

BTW: Amy’s voice is very relaxing. I find it easy to listen to her for any length of time. I can’t say the same thing about other knitting teachers on the internet.

Very helpful and easy to follow. I think this series makes the step-by-step of knitting much easier to understand. If I didn’t already knit, these videos would convince me to pick up some needles and yarn. Thanks very much for putting it all together!

Woohoo! I’m sure I’ll be referring some of my friends to these (especially those too distant to teach in person).

Thanks Amy and Sheldon.

P.S. When I click on the Shop tab and then hover my mouse over the Forum tab, I get a weird selection of options under the Forum tab (KH Forum and Photowall). The KH Forum button works, but the Photowall displays a 404 error.

Thanks. That’s something I have been meaning to fix. The store uses a different template than the rest of the site. The photowall is a relic of the past. It was a place where people could tag their photos on flicker and have them appear on that page on KH.

I’ll have to watch them later. I’m sure they deserve 5 stars!

Is it OK to ask here, why when I copy paste do I get the extra stuff at the end? Example:

Thanks. That’s something I have been meaning to fix. - See more at: http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112387#sthash.21RosRPw.dpuf

All I copied was (I’ll have to delete the extra):

Thanks. That’s something I have been meaning to fix.

I dunno, it’s something to do with your browser maybe. When I use a laptop that’s set up with Windows 7 (or it may be 8), when I highlight and paste in a link it’s not hidden in the message window like on my computer. It’s fine after the message is posted and appears in the thread.

Hmmm…I’ve not changed browsers but there have been updates. I’ll try Chrome and see if it does the same thing. Hold muzack

Thank you for holding. Testing in Chrome:

Thanks. That’s something I have been meaning to fix

OK, it’s Firefox, maybe an update changed something or I inadvertently changed a setting, I’ll have to see if I can figure it out. Thanks, Sue! It never occurred to me to try another browser.

Now that I think of it… I use an older version of Firefox at home and the laptop has Chrome. So it’s Chrome that doesn’t ‘behave as expected’ for me!

It’s part of the new ShareThis widget that appears to the left side of the screen on every page. I actually don’t like that it started doing that and have been meaning to find out if it can be disabled.

Ah. OK. Thanks for the info, Sheldon. I got rid of looking at the Share icons, I just have a little “Share” showing there. Until it gets disabled or I can do something to make it work differently here, I’ll just delete the extraneous stuff. No biggie.

I watched the first of the new videos, great of course. It felt like visiting with a friend who is showing me how to do something. I’ll get to the others soon. I want to have seen that to which I refer others.

How do you get rid of the Share icons?

Sue, maybe I shouldn’t have said I did it, is this a bannable offense??? I blocked the images. They bugged me a lot and I don’t do social-share stuff.

Certainly not a ban-able offense  We do hope that people don’t block ads on KH, as that is our primary means of supporting this website and our work. We try to keep the ads as non-annoying as possible. But if people do block them, so be it. Above all, we want people to enjoy and use KH.

I have set it so the share icons vanish if you resize the browser window to the point where the red background disappears. At least that works for me in Safari, Chrome and Firefox.

A lot of folks are using the share icons to pin things on Pinterest and Facebook. I put these up as a test and it ended up being used so much that I decided to leave them in place. I have noticed some really great older posts getting shared from our forum. After nearly 9 years of being online, this forum is a treasure trove of knowledge so it’s nice that folks can dig up some great posts and share them with others.

No I just find them slightly annoying. I tried what Sheldon said and made the browser window smaller, but I prefer full screen. i don’t do most of the social network sites, just FB, so won’t utilize them much. I’m glad they’re able to bring more people to the site though, I’m still learning stuff from it myself.

I agree, Sue, I’m glad they’re there…for other people. Pinterest and stuff is a mystery to me, I don’t want anything I do connected directly to FB or anything google (I’m always signing out of google search, youtube, google voice) but that’s my preference. I hesitate to ask about things because I’m concerned they’ll be taken as complaints when they’re not. I’m still getting used to how things are here and you can ask about something and that’s OK, nobody seems to be offended or taking it the wrong way. That’s why I love this site, people can (within reason) do what they want and learn and share and just have a good time.

Whenever I go to Knit Picks to order, I always go through the ad here. The ads that really annoy me are on yahoo and interfere with my email.
