Waste yarn and thumb

Hi-
I am going to knit fingerless gloves/mittins. I was trying to practice:

“Using waste yarn, k7; slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using working yarn; work in 4x1 Rib as set to end.”

When I was doing the practice, I could NOT get my waste yarn out, I had to pull SOOOOOOOOOOO hard. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Rae Ann

Maybe try a more slippery waste yarn or one that’s a little thinner?

You know what I do? I just carefully snip the waste yarn, stitch by stitch, then you just have to pull out the little bits and there’s little to no risk of losing the live stitches.

Is this Fetching from Knitty? When I did these, I used size 10 mercerized cotton (the kind you make doilies from) as my waste “yarn,” and it worked perfectly.

I used a piece of Opal sock yarn, worked fine for me.
