W & T on double points

I’m having a problem that I just can’t figure out! I’m working on a mitten pattern that calls for several short rows (wrap and twist) to shape the body. So I knit the required number of stitches, do a W & T, purl the required number of stitches, and do one more W & T (ending on the knit side). On the next row, which is all knit, I have no trouble knitting the wrap around the stitch it wraps. However when I get to the stitch that was wrapped when I was purling, the wrap is really tight. If I do manage to knit the wrap with the stitch I end up with a rather large loop on the wrong side. I’ve tried doing this a lot of different ways with practice yarn but I can’t figure it out.
I have no problem with this technique on straight needles, so I suspect it has something to do with the DPs. Any ideas? Thank you!

Have you tried twisting the wrap the opposite way from the way you normally have it sitting when you knit it together with its stitch?
