Vogue Lace-Up Camisole

All that’s left is the neckband, and it’s done…but I’m stuck!

This is from Spring/Summer '05, #23 Lace-Up Camisole.

The center front of the bodice is split, so you start in the middle and work 1x1 ribbing in flat rows around the neckline, creating straps as you work. I’m stuck on the straps:

Rib across Right Front
CO stitches for Right Strap, then work ribbing into these stitches (this is my problem)
Rib across Back
CO for Left Strap, work ribbing
Rib across Left Front

A Knitlister suggested casting on one stitch at a time, then working in pattern before casting on the next stitch.

Since it’s in the middle of the row, what cast on method would you suggest?

Any tips greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot, Renée

Sorry … this doesn’t make any sense to me in the context of a making a strap, so I wouldn’t do this. Using the knit-on cast method, I would cast on all required sts, then work the rib.

I know some people would use the backward loop to cast on in the middle of a row, but I’ve never had any luck with it because it’s so loose. Check out Amy’s Videos to see both the Knit-On CO and Backward loop CO.

Enjoy

Is this the one you’re making?

I’m getting Access Denied on your link…it’s #23, mustard yellow, p. 82.

My brain is aching with information overload! As notification of your post arrived, I was watching the cast-on videos at knittinghelp.

Last night I tried the (CO 1, K1; CO 1, P1) thing…total flop…probably mostly me since I was using the Backward Loop method.

It’s confirmed – I hate that method, and for exactly the reason you mention. Time to expand my casting-on horizons…

Thank you so very much…I was suspecting the Knit-On method looked appropriate for this but wasn’t sure. The straps are becoming a “thing” and you’ve boosted my confidence and motivation enough for me to get back in there.

Thanks again, Renée

The third picture from the bottom, “Anny Blatt Kanpur” :??

Yep…that’s it…altho the Kanpur silk is so far out of my budget it’s not even funny! Renée

You don’t have talk to me about budget … I TOTALLY know what you mean  It’s pretty sad that even Red Heart is tasking my budget as of late :verysad:

Okay, I ended up making a little swatch and trying everything under the sun…even took pix!

I used the knit cast-on method, and will give a few details just in case someone else runs into this.

The swatch had a little section for the Front, then the bound-off Arm section, then a little section for the Back. On WS, you knit across the Front and, when you reach the bound-off stitches, it’s time to cast on for the Strap.

  1. Cast on to L needle
This so doesn’t work. Your supply yarn spans the Arm opening and closes it up.

  2. Turn work and cast all stitches on to L needle
When you work back through the cast-on stitches, you have to turn your work again to continue working on WS. That puts you back at the beginning of the Strap with nowhere to go.

  3. Turn work, on L needle cast on one stitch, knit that stitch, slip to L needle; cast on next stitch, purl that stitch, slip to L needle; etc.
Bingo. When you’re done casting on and making each stitch, turn your work back over and you’re at the end of the Strap, ready to stitch around the Back.

Something about this still isn’t right because you have to reverse [k1, p1] to [p1, k1] to get everything to line up.

My solution? I just turned and cast on the L needle, turned again and continued around the Back. The straps will have one less row of ribbing…but at this point I’m so not worried about it! :happydance:

HTH someone working on the camisole! Or, if you have a better solution, please post! Renée

Haven’t figured out your problem as of yet, but I am dying to know where the patterns for all of those sweaters can be found…especially since I am going to my LYS today  so I can look for magazines, books, etc.

DUH…I just found it…vogue spring/summer. Too impatient I loved them so much!
