Hi I’m new here:waving:Heard about this site from the Wooly Wonders Forums
I have used the knittinghelp website for a while now for help with knitting my little ones lots of stuff(started out doing diaper soakers, love those!!!) But I’m wanting to knit my grandmother something special and was thinking about this ---->Shawl…now my question(finally,LOL)
What does this mean…
4th Row: K 3, * insert needle through next st and y o and K 1, y o, K 1 in same st, sl both y o and st off needle (3 sts made), P 3, repeat from * across row, ending last repeat with K 3.
When it says “insert needle through next st and y o and K 1” HOW am I suppose to insert my needle? I keep wanting to insert as if to knit and then it says y o but on which needle? If I yarn over on the needle I’m basically doing exactly what a knit stitch is but it says to K 1 after you do the insert and y o thing. I don’t get it!!!
And then it says to slip both y o and stitch off needle so I would assume that the first “y o” is somehow on my left needle not my right one?
If anyone knows what this means or has a link to some help I would love you LOL!!!:sun:

Row corrected for clarity.
4th Row: K 3, * insert needle through next st and y o, then K 1, y o, K 1 in same sts, sl both y o and st off needle (3 sts made), P 3, repeat from * across row, ending last repeat with K 3.
I just tried it to make sure but it means to put needle through both the next stitch and the yo you made in previous row, (treat them as one st) then, k1,yo,k1, into both sts at once and slip them off needle.
Nice stitch pattern. will have to file that one for future use.
My Mother-in-law asked me to make this for her sister for her b-day. I have been going over that 4th row over, and over. Thank God some one else asked the same question. The explanation makes so much sense. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!:cheering:
By the way my firend and I are not crazy about the collar but my MIL really thinks her sister will love it so…
This is great! My daughter wants the shawl WITH the collar, but I, too, have not been able to figure out that row, which is repeated in row 9 also. Took it to my knitting instructor, and she was at a loss also. Thanks very much.
Hi and welcome!
3rd Row: *K 3, yarn over (y o), slip (sl) the next st as if to P, repeat from * across row ending with K 3.
The repeat here is really 4sts: the k3 and then the slip one. Every time you do the repeat, you’ll increase one stitch because of the yarn over.
4th Row: K 3, * insert needle through next st and y o and K 1, y o, K 1 in same st, sl both y o and st off needle (3 sts made), P 3, repeat from * across row, ending last repeat with K 3.
For row 4 you’re going to start a kind of k2tog: the next stitch and the yo. Put the left needle into these two sts, pull through a loop (that’s the k1), then yo, k1 all into the same stitch. Finally, drop the sts off the left needle. Here’s avideothat may help. The only difference is that the knitters is working into a single stitch and you’ll be working into the k1 and yarn over together.
Lovely looking shawl, btw.
Here’s another video that may be clearer. The second time through, the knitter does an increase ending with 3 sts. Again, you’ll be knitting 2tog instead of working into a single stitch but the idea of the increase is the same
