Hi! I am trying to work out if they mean 86 stitches total or 86 plus the previous 42. There are no numbers of stitches listed after this direction to say how many there should be later on. Thank you! See photo section Next row: P. 42 etc.
We really need a bit more information to be positive. Is this a garment open in the front? It looks like the first 42 stitches are for the left front, then you bind off for the armhole, purl 86 for the back, bind off another 16 for the second armhole, then purl the last 42 for the right front.
Does your previous row have 202 stitches?

It is open, it is a cardigan. Yes 202 stitches. Ah this makes sense. My first ever cardigan
